Dutch Design in Development

Dutch Design in Development matches professional Dutch designers with small producers in developing countries.

Together with the producer and with other local designers, new products are developed that fit well in the current Western market. Graphic, spatial, interactive, product and brand design are often the focus of projects.

In 2007, 17 designers worked together with local producers in Kenya, Paraguay, Mali, Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Uganda, Peru and Guatemala, on new, exceptional products.

DDID mostly works on request of Dutch importers that want to improve the appeal of their collection. The aim of these importers and DDID is to support local producers and increase the sale of sustainably produced products from developing countries in Europe.

Unseenproducts, an online portal for retailers, and DDID work together strategically to bring design from developing countries to the Western market.

The Dutch designers on the other hand find inspiration in working in a different setting with innovative materials and techniques.

NCDO’s BiD Programme initiated DDiD in 2005 and finances this project.
