I am a product designer, focusing on appropriate technologies for developing countries. I am founder of the NGO APOPO vzw, and initiated the idea to use trained rats to detect landmines in Africa. Since 6 years I live with my family and colleagues in Tanzania, where we research and develop trained giant pouched rats for humanitarian detection purposes: detection of landmines and disease (Tuberculosis). Landmine detection rats are now operational in Mozambique. We participate in this challenge to enhance scaling up of the use of HeroRATS, and increase the output of humanitarian demining operations in Africa.
