The SNS REAAL Water Fund is an investment fund that will invest US$ 50 million in international water and sanitation projects and in small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) that are dedicated to sustainability and innovation. The Water Fund is managed by SNS Asset Management, that functions as the internal competence center for the distribution and maintenance of knowledge about sustainable investments. SNS Asset Management takes a “Triple P” (people, planet, profit) or “full scope evaluation” approach, which is based on an integrated analysis of economic, social and environmental criteria within SNS REAAL.

With regard to the gap between the needs and actual supply of finance in water, the SNS REAAL Water Fund wants to contribute to the needed water investments from the private sector. Herewith we provide incentives and stimulate processes for sustainable development with respect to “people, planet and profit” aspects. Our Water Fund aims to mobilize the required investments from the market by upscaling water projects from sustainability to bankability.

The sustainability and bankability of water projects and SMEs stand centrally in de aim of SNS REAAL Water Fund.
Appropriate solutions - appropriate in the technological, financial and managerial sense – will be pursued with stakeholder involvement in order to create an enabling environment that lowers risks and enhances leverage. We are working with partners and various mechanisms with regard to co-finance, guarantee mitigation and knowledge transfer.
Blending various investment types, we aim to apply the most appropriate investment type that fits to the specific situation and the aims of stakeholders. With respect to financial engineering the Water Fund works with loans / project finance, private equity and guarantees.
Especially four characteristics are distinctive in the strategy of the SNS REAAL Water Fund:
1. Upscaling from sustainability to bankability of projects.
2. Comprehensive market analysis and a centralised support of the total water chain and link to (potential) business cases. This is an integrated approach with al stakeholders; from end-user, project manager, investment manager and the investors.
3. Efficient and transparent information. The intrinsic processes with respect to management of risks and opportunities should be optimally facilitated between the partners through openness, control and response. This is the basis in order to make and maintain water projects sustainable as well as bankable.
4. Financial engineering: Appropriate finance mechanisms and pooling of finance, leverage via guarantees and packaging of donor (seed) money with investments aiming for win-win situations.
