The Business
the production of seeds (small indivuduals) of argopecten purpuratos.
this is a local specie of scallops.
The project consists in the installation of a Hatchery which will produce SMALL ALIVE SCALLOPS TO BE USED AS SEEDS FOR THE OCEAN FARMING.
These seeds will be offered to local farmers whom actually get the seeds directly from the natural banks. This is forbidden since atempts against natural reproduction and diminishes population.
Hatchery will allow farmers making production plans according to the needs of the market. It is important not to depend on natural conditions. We should avoid clandestine over extraction from natural banks.
Hatchery is intended to increase productivity of larvae and by this supplying the farmers. It comprises basic culture facilities for the rearing of scallops, a system providing the supply of filtered seawater, a temperature control system, larval rearing tanks for closed or flow-through systems, and flexible usage stacked raceways for spat rearing. Seeds will be placed on marine lanterns for growing to reach 3 cm. which is suitable for farmers.
Sells will be held on the same production area to small farmers placed in the bay of Paracas. Our strategy is based on lower costs on the production of the required seeds combined with other logistics saves and consultancy support for the small farmers.
We will supply small farmers placed in the bay of Paracas . Some farmers will export directly, other will sell to big exporters in Peru.- final destination is Europe (France, Spain, Italy…) for human consumption.
No competition at present. There are not any hatcheries in the area.
Our business is different because we will not collect seed from natural banks which is forbidden. We will produce our own seed and this will permit our planning as well as other’s.
Actually we are the unique company doing natural larvae collection. Others seem not knowing how. However we are aware that seasons will defer one to the other and it is been frequent that natural larvae production is neither sufficient nor opportune. A hatchery will be highly innovative for what is done today.
By selling good seed and the right sizes as supplying the farmers opportunetedly with advisement. On the event that other hatcheries outside the area could show up with their offers, they will have to face some of our strengths such us: climate conditions on the Pisco area are just suitable for the growing of the argopecten purpuratos; lower costs for the production and the logistics with reference to local market which we intend to supply.
The Entrepreneur & Management
The entrepreneurs are Luis Zapata and Edwin Azaldi. The first one is specialized in project formulating as well as competitiveness management (studies: low, economics, projects, exporting…) He has been promoter in multiple other projects particularly on the agribusiness area. Edwin Azaldi is a Biologist with experience in micro algae, hatcheries for ocean shrimps and actually he runs the farming for scallops in Pisco.
Our qualifications are mostly related to our present work and the particular relationship we have with the leading group for scallops farming and exporting in Perú. The know how is already available for us. However it is necessary adapting this to the area of Pisco, and there is where our experience becomes particularly valuable, because we are working right there from 2003.
We intend to spend whatever time is necessary on the week to make sure things work correctly. Labor journey will include day and night shifts.
Development
It is important to remark that living standards should improve for all people involved with scallops farming as for others on the chain of value. This will happen as a consequence of more production and better planning. More benefits will be granted to fishermen and small farmers. Chain of value includes: divers, transportation services, shellers, freezing, cleaners, biologists and others for whom new job opportunities will be created.
