The Nature Challenge 2008

For businesses on biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources

In 2008, BiD Network and WWF organized a pilot project to attract and support 'nature based businesses' for Kenya, Mozambique and Cameroon.

100 people submitted a plan and the best 6 were invited to come to the Netherlands to compete for the prize money, attend the international BiD marketplace in January 2009 and meet with investors / business partners.

Any results?

  1. BeKeDev Kenya processes and sells community based organic honey, creating income and biodiversity at a profit. He gained € 15.000 seed capital and TA support from Rabobank.
  2. Gulf Aquatics Cameroon sells ornamental fish cultivated by forest communities to international buyers. By participating they received a first order from a EU buyer.
  3. Elephant pepper ltd Mozambique produces chilli to mitigate the elephant human conflict. The semi-produced pepper is sold to Tabasco. By participating, he attracted a serious equity investment which is used as leverage to attract additional funding to expand.

Meet the WINNERS of 2008

Due to the success the nature challenge is relaunched with more national focus. There will be a national event and key domestic stakeholders from the investment, business and development community are actively engaged.
