The Business

What is your product/service?

Our products include organic eco-health Bee Honey, propolis, bees wax, soap, candles & juices. With growth we can also package soft drinks, silk for cloth & process ground nuts.
Our services include support to farmers to establish tree nursery, marketing of the products from trees, manufacture of & training in bee hive making. We intend to franchise all these activities in some selected locations (12) in Kenya.

What customer need/problem do your products/services satisfy?

There is demand for organic eco-health products & high protein value organic food items internationally. Much honey and tree products is available in Kenya, but lack standards to compete internationally

How will you make the product/service?

Primarily i have started 1 bee products processing and packaging plant in(Nakuru). The plant has a potential for processing lots of honey, but this is not possible due to technology and capital limitations. Bi-products (wastes) from the honey can make additional products (candles and soap) for sale locally and internationally. There is also a high potential for franchising honey and related organic eco-products in Kenya and internationally.

Explain how you will sell your product/service (marketing strategy) and how you will reach your customers (distribution strategy)?

Creek has entered into agreement with 12 franchises in Kenya, based in major source & consumption points of honey & tree eco-organic products. We have approached large retail-wholesale outlets with keen interest in the products. I am creating a marketing arm that will popularize the products in hotel chains, supermarkets, airlines, phamaceutical industry etc. We will advertize products locally & internationally through media networks

To whom are you selling, what is your market?

I have a ready market locally and internationally in airlines, supermarkets, fast food stores, shops, hotels chains, food supplement industry, phamaceutical companies. I have signed agreements with the 12 frachises to exclusively sell Creek's honey products range of Soap, Candle, juice, Propolis, cream and pure honey. Two phamaceutical companies also has keen interest in our honey.

Describe your competitors?

These include other honey products processing companies, both local and international. Despite these, the demand for the products cannot be satisfied, and thats why many phamaceutical and polish, paint companies are importing raw material while Creek could supply the same locally. Our signature is that we shall be dealing directly with farmers, and supporting environment conservation, and create employment locally; and more so our products cheap.

What makes your business different/better than your competitors (competitive advantage)?

We deal in eco-health & organic products & support rural economy. Our farmers are trained on best harvest technique, our (franchises) accept the best quality. Products we produce are best standards.

What makes your business, your product or service innovative?

Creek's honey & organic eco-health business looks into environment, through support to tree planting. I engage local farmers in tree planting. Targeted species provide flowers for bee-honey & are raw material for silkworms, fruit juices & bio-fuel. Creek will seek to initiate other enterprises from these trees. And our interest in farmers is very high, from start to end. Creek supports farmers tree nurseries, more income to them.

How will you ensure the growth of your business?

Ensuring the 12 franchises are active in generation of raw material (including seedlings, honey, silk, jatropha oil pods, mulberry fruits and Ground nuts) and in distributing finished products. By ensuring two serious marketing and packaging centres are established (Nairobi, Nakuru) to oversee the serious distribution of products regionally and internationally. Ensure farmers are well compesated for the raw material they supply to the franchises.

The Entrepreneur & Management

Describe the entrepreneur & management

I am a trained Environment entrepreneur (M.Sc.) with over 10 years international experience in initiation and management of nature based enterprises. Notable are stints in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya, with international organizations like IUCN, WWF, EC, VFA among others. I have managed similar enterprises in the region, with grants from a couple of donors. I am presently running the Creek Honey refinery in Nakuru, which i have built by savings.

What specifically makes you and (if relevant) your management team most qualified to build this business?

We have been working in the field of nature based enterprises for many years. Through practical experience with communities, we are aware that the enterprises can work. Through interaction with sales points for some of these products, we know that there is still a need to satisfy the local and international market for bee products, food supplements and fuel. And more to it, we are keen on enhancing achievement of all MDG's through enterprise.

How much time do/will you expect to spend per week in the business?

This is fulltime business. We are seeking to strengthen our activities in Kenya and enhance its compititiveness in the region & internationally in terms of trade in nature based eco-health organic products.

Development

How does your business improve the local living standards (social and environmental)?

Franchising tree growth ensures many farmers plant trees in their farms, which will provide many social and environmental benefits, including honey and healthy organic tree eco-products. Creek will purchase raw materials from the farmers & add to their day to day income. The franchises will provide employment to locals & this directly impacts local peoples living standards, and also supports environmental conservation efforts.
