Kenya Institute of Management
Since its inception in 1954 under the name of the East African Management Forum, The Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) has been a member organisation which aims to enhance management knowledge and practice in both the public and private sector.
The Institute has well established formal and informal links with major institutions including Resource Alliance, Technoserve, and the World Bank. More than 8,000 persons attend the various KIM programmes every year, including a growing number from other PTA countries.
The general management of the Institute is overseen by a Council elected during the Annual General Meeting. Members participate in the management of the Institute through the Council and its Committees, with advice from an advisory board refered to as the Board of Fellows. The National Chairman is the patron of the Institute.
The Management is led by an Executive Director who reports to the Council. Currently the Institute has over 100 permanent and pensionable employees and over 200-strong associate faculty both local and international. It has eleven fledged branches namely;Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Thika, Kisii, Kisumu, Kakamega, Kericho, Nyeri, Embu and Eldoret. The Head Office-Management Centre, is located at Nairobi, South C off Mombasa Road.
KIM Values and approaches to Management Development
- The Institute believes that good and professional management practices are a pre-requisite to socio- economic growth of a country. Therefore, the Institute will devote its entire resources to the promotion of good management practices and will develop an internal capacity to gather, compile and disseminate knowledge that would lead to improved management practices. In so doing, the Institute will be driven by the need to share knowledge rather than to monopolize it, to be out-spoken rather than silent, and will respect the rights of others to hold divergent views, to differ without conflict, and to negotiate its position in the Nation and in the community.
- The Institute recognizes that, no matter how strong and well managed it becomes, it will not achieve its goals without seeking out and establishing strong working relations with institutions and persons doing similar work. The Institute will therefore pursue a facilitative rather than an implementational role in management development. In its role, the Institute will identify partners to work with, and will find ways to strengthen them for increased responsibility.
- The Institute will be customer/ member driven, and will maintain close links with its clients and members in order to better understand their needs and develop appropriate programmes to address those needs.
- The Institute will maintain good and cordial relations with its staff, showing them respect and motivating them towards greater achievement.
- In its relations with the Government of Kenya, the Institute will be supportive and non-confrontational, and will seek the involvement of various governmental organs in its work.
- The Institute also recognizes the important role the international agencies play in the development of a nation and will seek close collaboration with them while maintaining its independent and professional membership status.
- When faced with new and unexpected issues, the Institute will be guided by entrepreneurial thought, will be proactive rather than reactive, and will be influenced only by what is right and ethical and not by the politics of the day.
- The Institute regards suppliers and consultants as partners. As such the Institute will maintain cordial relations with them, and will treat them fairly and ensure vested interests and conflicts of interests do not mar this relationship
