The Business

What is your product/service?

Vitaoils is a company that produces a line of healing organic herbal oils. The first product it has developed is called Mulberry Healing Oil, which combines three essential ingredients: Mulberry (also known as Bancoro, Noni, Morus Alba, Morinda Citrifolia), Lavender, and Coconut Oil. Each of these three oils is proven to have healing properties and the combination of the three produce a distinctly unique product unlike any other in the market. This product was chosen as the first product of Vitaoils because of its proven efficacy.

In partnership with Sister Alma, Natasha started Vita Oils to make the healing powers of the Mulberry available in Manila and use it as a tool to educate the Filipino consumer and provide them with a more accessible option to live longer and happier. Sister Alma of the Christian Community Order based in Negros Occidental produces the raw materials for the Mulberry Healing Oil. Serving an underprivileged local community, she produces this product to serve the public in her area, especially since many of the people there are unable to afford the high price of traditional pharmaceutical medicines.

Research at the University of Hawaii's Biomedical Sciences Department by Dr. Ralph Heinicke a scientist stated that Mulberry “(Morinda Citrifolia) is a natural combination of amazingly beneficial compounds to heal the body as a whole, and to maintain health. Mulberry has been scientifically documented to benefit in the fight against these ailments: Abscesses, Abdominal pains/swelling, Antibiotic and Antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, Backache, Burns and lesions, poisonous bites, and to improve signs of aging, dark spots on skin, depression, Dry or cracked skin, Inhibits early chronic fatigue syndrome, Virus problems, Anticancer activity, Arthritis, Chest infections, Wounds, fractures and boils, Diabetes Type II, Diarrhea, High Blood Pressure, Stroke, headaches, joint pains, high blood pressure, menstrual cramps, gastric ulcers, sprains, injuries, mental depression, senility, poor digestion, atherosclerosis, blood vessel problems, drug addiction, relief of pain, and many others. Although this list looks like a page torn out of a traveling medicine man's manual, it is probably conservative."

Explain how you will sell your product/service (marketing strategy) and how you will reach your customers (distribution strategy)?

Vitaoils is a part of the health and wellness industry, which is continuously growing. Going around the malls, you can find several stores which sell health and beauty products. There is The Body Shop, which is a popular company worldwide. Healthy Options, Beauty Bar and Rustan’s Essences are only some of the examples of the local stores that sell health and beauty products. Results of extensive market research have shown us that most oils sold by these stores are for aromatherapy.
Another result of our study shows us that although individually, the mulberry, therapeutic grade lavender and coconut oils are all widely used for their healing abilities; Vitaoils is the pioneer in fusing the three main ingredients used in Mulberry Healing Oil.
Vitaoils is targeting several various potential markets in the health and wellness industry, especially the spa industry, which is our biggest potential market. Based on surveys conducted by Intelligent Spas, which does studies of spas internationally, the Philippine spa industry has grown by 74% since 2003 and continues to expand. We aim to be the biggest supplier of massage oils to spas in the Philippines to help us achieve our sales projections. The Philippine Spa Association, which consists of several spas around the country, will be our guest during our product launch and hopefully, we can get 50% of their members by our first year of operations through proper marketing strategies.

Among the competitors are actually just some known brand names featuring aromatherapy massage oils that actually have stores located in malls such as Body Shop, Aura Cacia, Dermalogica, L’occitane, Propoline, Terranova, Precious Essences, et al. Their strength is that they do not have to promote their brand and product as much as Vitaoils has to because they are already known. Their weakness however is that they only focus on aromatherapy unlike Mulberry Healing Oils and its triple therapeutic benefits because of the fact that Mulberry, Coconut and Lavender each have individual healing properties.

Dry scalp and dandruff is a common problem of both males and females of every age group. Expensive treatments created by international brands offer solutions through products such as Kerastase anti-dandruff, Head and Shoulders, Palmolive Anti-dandruff Shampoo, Gard, Nizoral, etc. Coconut oil has been used for generations as a natural remedy for dry scalp and dandruff. Mulberry Healing Oils, with its coconut oil base and pleasant lavender aroma taken from essential oil, is an inexpensive yet equally effective alternative to the anti-dry scalp and anti-dandruff products made by international conglomerates.

For those experiencing nausea, muscle pain, sores, and/or menstrual cramps traditional, Western medicine prescribes ingesting a pain killer. Mulberry Healing Oil offers a less invasive alternative. Plenty of research shows that Aromatherapy helps relieve nausea. Also, rubbing the oil directly on the cramped muscles relieves the pain, often making pain killers unnecessary. The brands that carry products used for muscle pains and menstrual cramps are Midol, Biogesic, Advil, Alaxan, Mefenamic acid, Ibuprofen, etc… In a way, these are competitors of Mulberry Healing Oil that accomplishes the same tasks.

What makes your business different/better than your competitors (competitive advantage)?

Vitaoils’ Mulberry Healing Oil is an extremely versatile and potent product. It is unlike any other massage oil that is currently available in the commercial market. It has triple healing properties made possible by the combination of its three main ingredients, namely: mulberry oil, lavender essential oil and coconut oil. Each of the three oils has their own vast assortment of healing properties and medical uses.

The medicinal properties of the mulberry plant have been used by the Polynesians as far back as 100 AD when they migrated from Southeast Asia to Hawaii. They brought with them several plants and animals, which they considered essential for their survival and the mulberry plant was among the 12 out of the 317 plant species that were most commonly used for healing ailments. Botanical studies from Indonesia have been used to verify most of the uses for the Mulberry plant as those claimed by the Hawaiians. Today, after further research and much study, even more uses have been discovered.

The Entrepreneur & Management

Describe the entrepreneur & management

This idea began when I had to come up with a business for my school. Studying in a school that breeds young social entrepreneurs who will make a difference in the world. I looked for three things when I was figuring out my entrepreneurial venture: 1) it should be somewhat related to my father's organic farming enterprise (our family has been in this industry for decades), 2) it should be something I am passionate about and 3) it should have an altruistic angle.

When I pitched my criteria to my mom she introduced me to Sister Alma. In 1992 Sister Alma started making healing oils in Negros Occidental because the less fortunate could not afford to buy medicines from pharmacies. Her charitable work has now created a following and has produced, among other things, the Mulberry Oil - Vita Oils' main ingredient.

Development

How does your business improve the local living standards (social and environmental)?

Citizenship is, at its core, social responsibility. It means doing your part for the common good, making your community and its institutions work well, serving the community, and obeying the laws.

Giving people complimentary and alternative forms of healing is more than a cure. While it is important for tissue to heal, for bones to knit and for regeneration to take place, healing also occurs on a deep emotional level. In order to heal, we also need to be nurtured, to feel safe and loved and to be cared for. We need to put aside our worries and stresses and focus inward in order to harness the natural ability of the body to heal itself. The best healers are those who are able to nurture their own spirit and release the healing process from inside. Natural remedies have a big role to play in healing after injury of any kind. Herbal medicines have been used for centuries to help repair broken bones, torn and sprained muscles, internal and external bruising and injuries of all types.
Ongoing pain and stiffness due to conditions like arthritis, rheumatism and sports related injuries respond well to natural intervention without the side effects commonly associated with the prescription drugs.

Because of its many benefits, Morinda citrifolia has been known to provide a number of anecdotal effects in individuals having cancer, arthritis, diabetes, indigestion, malignancies, broken bones, high blood pressure, diabetes, pain, infection, asthma, toothaches, blemishes, immune system failure, and others.
