Kenya: Special Team Starts First Phase Of National Wealth Plan "Vision 2030"

The first phase of Vision 2030 launched last month by President Mwai Kibaki is under way and would be be completed in April 2007. The wealth plan seeks to make Kenya a middle-income nation with sustained economic growth of 10 percent over the next 25 years.

A special team drawn from the Government, private sector and civil society, last week started identifying barriers to the plan and ways of solving them.

So far, the team has been consulting stakeholders in Government, civil society and the private sector with a view to assess and understand their performance backgrounds.

The initial phase focuses mainly on the economic pillar of a sustained two digit economic growth. It also outlines key requirements on the social and political pillars for creation of wealth.

Though the consulting team reports to the Ministry of Planning and National Development, the Government said all Kenyans to contribute in the process regardless of their age, colour, community or political inclination.

"Vision 2030 goes beyond any single Government, party, political persuasion, or region. It must benefit all Kenyans and our team therefore commits toy seek out all views and opinions from all Kenyans.

"This would ensure that everyone's opinion is taken into account as we embark on this milestone assignment on behalf of the people of Kenya" said acting project director Dr Wahome Gakuru who is also the director of the National Economic and Social Council.

The Vision 2030 team is being advised by global strategy consultancy firm McKinsey & Company while Ogilvy Kenya supports its communications strategy.

The president launched the wealth creation plan in the presence of company executives of some of the country's blue chip companies and senior Government officials.
