Entrepreneur's update

Kamworks

1 year later

Kamworks supplies complete solar energy solutions on the Cambodian market for NGO-type customers. Last year they built a (solar powered!) production plant for the assembly of solar lanterns. The production of the first solar lanterns got delayed, but will start in 2007.

Country Cambodja, Srê Ampil (rural village, 30km from Phnom Penh)
Total investment € 30,000 own investment, a building (workshop and house) has been donated to our partner Khmer Foundation with funding of the Foundation Pico Sol
Turnover €40,000 - we supplied and installed solar energy systems to three NGO-type customers. These projects include solar energy systems for lighting, refrigeration, computers, water pumping and other domestic energy supply.
Direct employment 1 person + 2-10 people on occasional basis
Indirect employment 10 people
Contribution to Millennium Goals We installed several solar energy systems that contribute to improved living standards and supply clean water. More results expected next year; we aim to train 30-40 persons with orphan backgrounds coming years, among them also women.
Achievements
  • Since 1st of March, our managing director Arjen Luxwolda has moved to Cambodia to set up the business. The building was almost finalised, the finishing of the (solar powered!) production plant has been his major task during the first months.
  • Our assembly target (the Phase 1-activities) appeared to be difficult to start with. At present we have our first European customer for a small first assignment to assemble games.
  • We acquired a co-operation with Ecostream, Dutch solar system integrator, to have a stock in consignation. With this stock, we supply and we install complete solar energy solutions on the Cambodian market for NGO-type customers. (phase 2 activities)
  • Regarding the production of solar products (the phase 3 activities), we are delayed, due to problems with the electronic design of the product. This will be solved in the course of coming months, due to partnerships we are building up at present. In course of 2007, we will do a field experiment to prove the technical operation. Production is planned to start in the second half of 2007.
  • Most likely, we found a first customer for a first batch of solar lanterns. We discussed on the destination of these products, and agreed on an project in co-operation with a Cambodian NGO. Due to our delay in product development, the realisation of this project is also delayed.
  • We are still in the stage of registration at the Cambodian authorities, expected to be finalised soon.
  • End of September, a market assessment by a University Twente student will be commissioned for new products and business opportunities.
  • For the distribution of the solar products on the Cambodian market, we are preparing a project to train micro entrepreneurs. We found financial resources to finance this ambitious project at the World Bank. The project will be executed during 2007-2008.
  • In co-operation with our Cambodian partner, the Khmer Foundation for Justice, Peace and Development, we found financial resources to build a second building, a small school where our training activities will take place. The school will also be used for English lessons for children (orphans).
Plans for 2007
  • Work on a the structure of the organisation, set-up a Dutch Ltd. to facilitate the export and import.
  • Official opening of the company in October/ November
  • Starting up the World Bank project in January
  • Starting up production solar lanterns second half 2007
  • Starting up the "20 orphanage project" of Dutch charity Pico Sol

CONGRATULATIONS

I am KIRANGA BM from Kenya. Congratulations for the work you are doing. I am interested in solutions to the energy problems for people living in areas not connected to the mains power line or are not able to afford getting connected.
I am currently developing a business plan for the productions of low cost devices for lighting indoors and outdoors.
My idea is to use rechargeable 6v batteries and white LED systems. Might you have a working design for a simple WLED lamp that can light up an ordinary room of 10x10ft ?
Thanks. Keep up!
