Production of High-Value Vegetables Using Simplified, Non-circulating Hydroponics
Low-cost Hydroponics that does not need pumps or electricity to produce fresh, hygienic, pesticide-free vegetables, in partnership with persons with hearing, speech, orthopedic, and visual impairments
Photo shows me lifting one corner of a floating raft of lettuce. Once transplanted in the grower cups and floated in the nutrient solution box, it's basically just wait 25-30 days until harvest. The nutrient solution simply stays and is not circulated.
This proposed business, which will operate in the Philippines, will seize the opportunity brought about by an increasing trend in salad vegetable consumption across all economic classes, sparked by growing health consciousness and the appearance of salad items in the menus of mass-market fast food chains, with lettuce as the base component. The business will produce fresh, hygienic, and pesticide-free whole lettuce and other salad greens using an extremely low-cost soil-less farming technology called Simplified, Non-circulating Hydroponics (SiNcH), to be grown by persons with physical disabilities (PWDs) and marketed direct to consumers and to institutional buyers such as supermarkets, hotels, resorts and restaurants.
The business proponent, a trained and experienced agriculturist, will partner with the National Federation of Cooperatives of Persons with Disability. The proponent will be the technology provider and in-house production specialist, while NFCPWD will provide the capital and operate the project through its member cooperatives acting as autonomous business units in different parts of the country.
For the first three years, business units will be established in five biggest Philippine cities, namely Metro Manila, Iloilo, Cebu, Davao, and Puerto Princesa. Each basic SiNcH business unit with 2, 3, and 5 production modules operating in year 1, 2, and 3, respectively, is projected to earn the following net incomes: € 3.325,78 in year 1; € 6.327,49 in year 2, and € 12.092,07 in year 3, and will need start-up investment of € 5.970,15. For these five cities, total first year start-up investment needed is € 23.880,60, while subsequent start-up funds for other cities will be provided by loan repayments by each business unit, re-loaned to others. This basic business unit will achieve a yearly gross margin percentage of 91%, return on sales of 24% and above, return on investment of 48% and above and a payback period of 18 months. The tremendously low cost of sales of the business will be parlayed into livelihood opportunities for a total of 50 PWDs in these locations, including women with disabilities, each earning the equivalent of € 3,46 per day, or a total of € 114.274,96 in three years.
This business is not only a profitable enterprise and source of livelihood for resource-poor PWDs, but also showcases a food- production technology that eliminates soil-erosion-causing tillage, avoids fertilizer run-off and the use of herbicides and pesticides, and uses only 5% of the water and one-third the space needed by soil-based farming. Thus, the business directly addresses the 1st Millenium Development Goal, “Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty, the 2nd MDG “Promote gender equality and empower women," as well as the 7th MDG “Ensure environmental sustainability."
(Note: The National Federation of Cooperatives of Persons with Disability(NFCPWD), founded in 1998 and registered with the Philippines Cooperative Development Authority (Reg. No. MLA-063-F), is a federation of 12 primary cooperatives wholly owned, managed, and operated by men and women with hearing, speech, orthopedic, and visual disabilities. These cooperatives operate as independent business units and are currently producing various products with school chairs and desks as their main line of business. This proposed Simplified Hydroponics business is part of a diversification strategy of the Federation and will earn income for the Federation, the member cooperative (business unit), the BiD Challenge proponent (business plan author), and the PWD workers.)
The Business
The products of this business will be, a) Lettuce of various types, harvested whole with roots intact and, b) Other salad greens, also harvested whole with roots intact -- grown using Simplified, Non-circulating Hydroponics, specifically the floating raft method.
The majority component in our target market group belongs to the middle and upper economic classes. This sub-group lends well to direct marketing yet can also be reached indirectly through supermarkets, which are experiencing an increase of buyers shifting from wet markets. However, we will also serve the masses indirectly, by marketing to mass-market food-chains that also target this sub-group (e.g. Jollibee, KFC, Wendy’s) as these food chains have started including salad fares in their menu.
For the first year, our business will operate in the two largest Visayan cities, Iloilo and Cebu, and in Metro Manila. For subsequent years, we will add operations in other Philippine cities where NFCPWD has members, namely, Davao and Puerto Princesa.
All produce mentioned above have distinct advantages that cannot be duplicated by soil-grown salad greens, namely:
Fresher — produce harvested whole at maturity using SiNcH have their roots intact and kept damp and covered during transport and even during display at counter shelves (hence are still alive);
Cleaner -- untouched by soil or open-source irrigation water, they are clean even without washing (washing prior to transport reduces shelf life), and safe from soil-borne micro-organisms like E. Coli, Salmonella and fecal bacteria from manure fertilizer.
Safer in terms of nutrient levels — the levels of nutrients fed to the plants are pre-determined not to exceed a certain level, and so there is no danger of certain nutrients being taken up in toxic levels (this can occur in soil-based farming if the soil is over- fertilized or too fertile or contaminated with heavy metals);
Pesticide-free — no soil is used in SiNcH so the produce never get in contact with herbicides, nematicides, molluscicides (for snails and slugs), or soil insecticides;
More nutritious — all elements are present in the nutrient solution in optimum amounts; in soil-based methods nutrient levels are difficult to control so they are either in lower or higher levels than required, and may be present in toxic quantities, e.g. nitrates.
Independent business units will be set up in selected urban centers in the country where NFCPWD has member cooperatives. For the first year of operation these will be in Iloilo, Cebu, and Metro Manila (two locations), and subsequently, Davao and Puerto Princesa. Each business unit in a particular city will be run and managed by the local cooperative of PWDs. Thus, for Iloilo, the business will be operated by the Association of Differently-Abled Persons Iloilo Multi-purpose Cooperative (ADPI-MPC), for Cebu by the Atlas Mining Community Handicapped Association Multi-purpose Cooperative (AMCHA-MPC), for Davao by the Association of Differently-Abled Persons Multi-purpose Cooperative (ADAP-MPC), and for Puerto Princesa by an association of PWD’s that will be formed accordingly. The two Metro Manila business units will be operated directly by the NFCPWD.
Each business unit, being an autonomous and distinct legal organization registered with the Cooperative Development Authority (the Philippine government agency that regulates cooperatives) will receive funding to start up the SiNcH projects in the form of a loan from the NFCPWD. Each business unit, headed by the cooperative’s Manager, will be responsible to profitably run and manage the business. NFCPWD will regularly monitor the project to make sure that the funds are properly applied. The business partner/proponent (Roberto A. Alaban, Jr.) will teach the SiNcH technology to each business unit and once operating will conduct regular check ups and ad-hoc trouble-shooting visits to make sure that production operates optimally, and to share new production or marketing developments.
Start funding will be provided by the NFCPWD and, if the business plan is lucky enough to win in the BiD Challenge, from the prize money.
Development
Persons with disabilities are generally among the poorest of the poor, both in urban and rural rural communities. Mainstream poverty reduction programs of the government do not necessarily address the needs of PWDs, the majority of whom live the proverbial “hand-to-mouth??? existence and continue to have limited access to health care, education, transportation, and access to employment.
But while employment opportunities for people with disabilities remain limited, disability does not mean inability. Every so-called “disabled??? person has talents and skills and like everyone else has the right to decent work. With self-determination coupled with advances in technology like Simplified, Non-circulating Hydroponics, employment prospects for people with disabilities can significantly flourish. This is an underlying principle of this business plan because Filipinos generally take to farming as a source of livelihood, a fact evinced by unemployed persons going into small-scale gardening when they can’t find any other kind of work, as long as space is available. Soil-based farming, however, becomes difficult for a person with physical disability. SiNcH, the technology used in this business, will enable PWDs to grow high-value vegetables while doing away with difficult physical work needed in soil-based farming.
This business will provide employment and access to new business skills to 50 PWDs, including women, for the first three years. Each will earn production-indexed income equivalent to a gainful take-home pay of € 3,46 per day. In a few short years, the business will make it possible for a significant number of persons with disabilities to earn a living wage, and to become productive and respected members of their communities.

i think the technical aspect of your business program falls under therapeutic horticulture, a contemporary arm of horticulture which uses gardening activities as tool for rehab programs (aimed at promoting physical, emotional and/or mental wellness).

Often we help our neighbors by providing vegetable seeds and some fruit tree saplings. Due to the down turn in the economy, many find themselves unemployed and desperate.
