The Business

What is your product/service?

Our product is Flake Ice and it retains only 15-18% residual water making it
relatively dry and compact. It melts relatively slow, releasing moisture over a
long period of tine without replenishment. It applies where long lasting
refrigeration and moisture are needed. Our target market is the fishing industry, other foodstuffs industrial processing plants as well as the public.

What customer need/problem do your products/services satisfy?

Our Ice keeps our customers products fresh, helps their products to last longer and also enhances presentation of these products which drives purchases at higher prices.

How will you make the product/service?

KIL has an on-site production facility with an ice machine model EVE 1300 that produces 12 tons of ice in 24 hours and plans to buy an extra machine. Flake ice is formed by spraying water over the surface of a refrigerated drum to freeze it and is mechanically removed with a blade. Water and salt are the raw materials used. Ice produced is 2-3 mm thick. The facility has a cold room with a reinforced ceiling where the ice machine is installed.

Explain how you will sell your product/service (marketing strategy) and how you will reach your customers (distribution strategy)?

KIL shall expand its marketing activities through extensive advertisement on
radio, shall take part in trade shows, word of mouth, will offer affordable prices and will also make sure the place is convenient for customers, easily accessible and spacious with a drive-thru so that customers can come and buy the ice from the facility. As the business grows KIL will introduce unique vending machines that are convenient for customers.

To whom are you selling, what is your market?

KIL’s product is doing exceedingly well on the Ugandan market with current
production not able to satisfy the effective demand. We currently have excess
demand of over 50% of what we are producing. The target market is Fishing
Industry and Fish distributors, Daily, Cheese, Fruit and vegetables, Meat
processors and the public (consumers of beverages) with purchasing power.

Describe your competitors?

KIL competes directly with a number of ice plants like Kampala Ice Plant, Igloo Ice Plant, Bukakata Ice Plant, Gege Ice Plant, Ndeba Ice plant, Nalukolongo Ice plant, Natete Ice plant among others. These plants have been in the market for a long time and are known by the majority of the customers and some have higher capacities. However, despite the players and new entrants, the current market demand is currently not met and is increasing.

What makes your business different/better than your competitors (competitive advantage)?

We are now established, with a reputation for quality. We are now well positioned to deal with competition, very reliable and it is by offering a good service that we have gained a competitive advantage.

What makes your business, your product or service innovative?

The introduction of Scotsman’s EVE machine which is built in high grade extra
thick AISI 304 stainless steel simply testifies to superior performance, shows our commitment to quality and ensures reliability of our customers. Our machine is certified according to the most stringent regulations (CE&PED) and by the most recognised testing laboratories (RINA, DNV) and also complies to the quality system ISO9001.

How will you ensure the growth of your business?

KIL will continue to develop new business opportunities that will help us expand our product lines by identifying additional use of the ice we produce.

Development

How does your business improve the local living standards (social and environmental)?

Krystal Ice has improved peoples standards by providing employment. This mainly concerns the youth with low skills who working as our casual labourers who are now earning a living and are thus able to look after their families. Our ice has given the locals an opportunity to get their product on the market in first class condition, earning them more revenue and also supporting more small scale fisherman this directly improves their incomes.
