Strengthening the capacity of management for Mango Growers

The Mango Growers Association at the Alto Piura Valley (APROMALPI) develops its management capacity for international markets.

Since the beginning APROMALPI has been carrying out measures
in order to join the world market by obtaining the Global Gap certification,
which ensures the sale of a mango production abroad.

Through various projects APROMALPI has been encouraging issues such as partnering and the incorporation of new markets, generating a better negotiating position.

The Business

What is your product/service?

The product is the Peruvian Mango variety Kent and Edward. Specially selected for export. This product is grown under special organic characteristics organic growth conditions.

What customer need/problem do your products/services satisfy?

Consumers prefer this Mango because of the sugar density, appearance, good consistency and deep flavor of the pulp. Mango is considered a tropical fruit of high demand.

How will you make the product/service?

APROMALPI selects personnel to carry out the harvesting work, and the drivers to transport the product from the farm to processing plant.
Once the product has been harvested and transported to the processing plant, the quality control take place. After, the product goes through the washing and calibrated phase. Packing, palletizing and placed it in cold storage is the last thing done at the plant. Once transferred to the port, the container is sealed for later shipment.

Explain how you will sell your product/service (marketing strategy) and how you will reach your customers (distribution strategy)?

Selecting a specific customer segment to which we direct our product and also what are the potential customers in the organic trade market area.
Organizing the association towards a process-oriented customer satisfaction, in order to fulfill the basic conditions for this market: respect, transparency, dialogue and negotiation between the parties, generating business equity. Offering quality in product, organization and people.

To whom are you selling, what is your market?

Customers demanding our product are: AgroFair (for export), CEPICAFE and
Ethique. Our main market is located at the international level, especially in The Netherlands, until now the main buyer. However our aim is through business trips and trade fairs, find new potential customers for fresh mango around the world.

Describe your competitors?

AGROFAIR is our main customer, who is also supplied by other (fresh mango) producers abroad such as Mexico (Frussi), Ecuador (The Guabo), Peru (Valle del Chira) , Brazil (ASPPIF) Burkina Faso (Fedaf, UPPFL-UPB), Mali (Yanfolila), could be considered as our main competitors.

What makes your business different/better than your competitors (competitive advantage)?

A good organization level, strategic alliances of cooperation in terms of market management, association, access to markets, etc. Good relationship with parties providing international funding.

What makes your business, your product or service innovative?

With a pioneering partnership in diversified agribusiness activities (organic and conventional fruit), capable of serving international markets that demand quality products and whose certification is the banner of competitiveness in these markets.

How will you ensure the growth of your business?

Developing activities related to the implementation of BPA, with the aim of promoting quality certification in organic products.
Increase efficiency in information systems and market research.
Increase sales in fair trade and organic markets.
Promote the development of human capital in the partnership
through a corporate training plan.

Describe the entrepreneur & management

The Company is an Association of Small Producers. The governing body is the General Assembly of Members, who appoints a General Manager who set up strategy rules and the company development.
Investments decisions are primarily made at the management board and then submitted to the Assembly for approval.

What specifically makes you and (if relevant) your management team most qualified to build this business?

Management Team is headed by General Manager Ms. Cleida Garcia Accountant with 10 years of experience in exports and organization, Matias Hernandez floor manager with 6 years experience in process management, Kurt Nole field manager with 7 years experience in agronomic management of mango, Cesar Dominguez, an accountant with 7 years experience in accounting.

How much time do/will you expect to spend per week in the business?

Company staff and board members spend 8 hours per week (40 hours per week) to the development of business activities.

How does your business improve the local living standards (social and environmental)?

Social impact will be positive because the mango growers will have to improve product quality and achieving a sustainable production. Also, it will improve their economical and social conditions, allowing them to access a better education, health and basic services.
