Straw based paper
A new way to make quality paper which is environment friendly in every respect! Developed in India.
Modified Kraft Chemical Recovery (MKCR) is a chemical and energy recovery technology from straw pulping waste black liquor effluent,in particular the difficult lignocellulosic agro wastes containing high to medium levels of silica like rice, wheat straws and bagasse.
Till today, lignocellulosic wastes, which contain high to medium levels of silica, have posed a problem in effective recovery of chemicals and to make the effluent discharge acceptable as per current standards. MKCR has been successfully developed in India with pilot plant trials for five years. 85% Caustic soda recovery has been established in the pilot facility itself. It also recovers the problematic silica in the form of precipitated dry silica, which can find further use as a valuable raw material. Also the lime is recovered as well as energy in the waste lignin, which provides sufficient energy for process heat requirements as well as to run a co-gen boiler for producing enough electricity to run the whole paper making plant. The unique MKCR process uses waste rice husk to make the wet mix fuel. Hence bio mass based power and heat generation will make the whole process free of GHG. The steam condensate water is also recycled leading to water conservation. Currently MKCR is patented in India and valid until 2016.
The project cost is U.S$6 million, including setting up a pilot plant to make ethanol from the pure cellulose. Since MKCR enables soft cook, it gives clean cellulose from waste straws. Hydrolysis and fermentation, which are now standard process, will yield ethanol. This would be a valuable extension to MKCR applications, making it possible to make two value added products - High quality paper with up to 90% blends of nonwood straw pulp and ethanol for use as a clean fuel. Later we plan to make biodegradable plastic starting with the clean cellulose.
