5 options for sustainable growth

BiD Network is a small but highly effective in matching investors with Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries. BiD Network works with professional national partners in 11 developing countries. Together we have helped start 300 SMEs that have created more than 2500 direct jobs over the past 4 years.

This is clearly not enough. Together, your organisation and BiD Network can have a larger impact. Here are 5 options for collaboration, with guaranteed results.

1. Invest directly in the best SMEs

The best SMEs seeking finance to grow are continuously selected, by BiD Network assessors, from thousands of proposals. These SMEs seek an average of US$ 150,000 in finance for minority shares or multi-year loans. On average a BiD Network SME creates 30 direct jobs in the first three years. All our entrepreneurs aim to grow and generate returns for investors. View the best SMEs: www.bidnetwork.org/search/119538/en

2. Stimulate entrepreneurship in a developing country

BiD Network can kick start the sourcing of SME business plans in a developing country for €150,000 in the first year. The sourcing of SME propositions is organized with local entrepreneurship centers, business angel networks or financial institutions. Based on our experience in 11 countries, we can guarantee results. We will generate about 250 proposals and start up at least 10 SMEs per year, creating at least 100 jobs. Your contribution will leverage at least 3x the value in private capital for local SMEs. In the first years business plans are usually sourced via a business plan competition that generates a lot of exposure in a country. A direct SME sourcing approach via local banks and investors is also an effective mechanism for identifying investment-grade SMEs.

3. Support the start up of individual SMEs

Based on our experience of assisting in the start-up of 300 SMEs over the past four years, we can support the start-up and growth of a selected SME in a developing country for €15,000. This amount will leverage 5x its value in private capital to finance the SME.

4. Create employment through SMEs

If collaboration within a country or with an SME is beyond your scope, then you can contribute to creating one or more jobs. The cost of creating a job is €1000. On average one SME will create 10 jobs in the first 2 years and around 30 by the end of the 3rd year.

5. Sponsor a SME business plan competition

BiD Network can organize SME business plan competitions focused on a country, a theme or a sector. Through our online business plan assessment and processing system we can operate a competition efficiently. BiD Network also works with hundreds of business coaches and assessors worldwide to help assess and coach entrepreneurs all year round.
In 2008 the World Wildlife Fund for Nature contracted BiD Network to source SME business propositions that contribute to nature conservation. In 2009 this will be repeated. An Agriculture and Food processing Challenge is in the making. Other planned competitions will focus on women’s entrepreneurship, water, trade and energy.
As an indication, the Agriculture & Food processing Challenge will source SME plans in 60 countries at a cost of only €150,000. Next to supporting the creation of SMEs in this sector the competition will also attract public and political attention the importance of investing in the agriculture and food processing sector in developing countries.
