Rags2Riches, a social enterprise based in Payatas that transforms scraps into designer bags, won the top prize in the International BiD Challenge 2008 competition.
Echostore, a boutique that promotes "sustainable lifestyle," is also a Philippine entry to the International Marketplace in the Netherlands.
Xavier Alpasa, S.J., president of Rags2Riches Inc. and Pacita Juan of EchoStore won over 106 business ideas and plans sent by Filipinos all over the country.
Both were the Philippine BiD entries to the International Marketplace in the Netherlands in January 22-27, 2009.
Rags2Riches
Rags2Riches is a business that transforms scraps to bags designed by renowned Filipino designer Rajo Laurel and produced by Payatas dumpsite women in Quezon City.
"We used to just weave rags for Pesos 8 each. Then Fr. Xavier came to Payatas. This cloth, which we weave carefully, could have ended up as four pot holders. But now it is beautiful because of the design. We now earn more from the bags," Anna Annipao, 41, one of women-weavers, explained in Filipino.
EchoStore
EchoStore, short for Environment & Community Hope Organization Store, is a boutique in posh Serendra in Taguig City that carries home decor, food and nutritional items, fashion accessories, handicrafts and other organic products that promote sustainable use of resources and help create livelihood opportunities, especially the poor.
"EchoStore is really about giving others a chance," explains Jeannie Javelosa, who together with Pacita "Chit" Juan and Reena Francisco, opened the shop four months ago.
