The Business Case for Nature Conservation

Stories from the forest

The continuing destruction of nature and loss of biological diversity have reached alarming proportions. Around the globe, important ecosystems are being destroyed, tropical rainforests are being cut down and an increasing number of species of wild animals and plants are threatened by extinction.

Exisiting measures., although sizeable, seem insufficient.

Can Small and Medium sized businesses use natural resources sustainably and be profitable and create employment? Can profitability and the improvement of biodiversity go hand in hand?

Four experts from IUCN, Avalon, WWF and ARK will be sharing on what is happening in the field of nature conservation through businesses.

This panel discussion will be held from 15:30-16:15 at the Creative Factory in Rotterdam during the BiD Marketplace and final award event.

During this 'update from the field', four speakers (from IUCN, Avalon, WWF and ARK) will be sharing their positive and negative experience related to 'the business case for biodiversity'.

There is considerable literature on the subject and there seems to be
a consensus about the importance of this theme. However, there are many,
sometimes conflicting, approaches and intervention schemes. Others
still doubt the feasibility of SME's as a means to nature conservation or even the improvement of biodiversity..... .

What are the lessons so far? What cases have helped the industry to make decisions on what role to take and/or what sector to focus on? What role can conservation organizations play to make the business case robust and what can be done by others?

Come and join this session!
