The Business
The product is Tawilis Sardines in Corn Oil. The main ingredients are fresh-water sardines locally known as Tawilis processed and packaged like Spanish sardines. Tawilis are fresh water sardines in the Philippines endemic to Taal Lake. Processing the tawilis into Spanish sardines will make it available to consumers outside of Batangas ensuring the same freshness and quality as that of the fresh raw tawilis taken from the Lake.
Tawilis sardines makes for an alternative to the expensive Spanish sardines sold in supermarkets and likewise markets as a health food using local corn oil. It contributes to the need for protein-rich food.
Tawilis will be processed into Spanish Sardines and placed in bottles. The whole process include cleaning and drying of the fish, deep frying, and pressurizing to ensure quality of the produce. It will have a 15-day curing period before it is actually ready for market.
Packaged and marketed as a gourmet food, this product will be sold exclusively to specialty shops and restaurants. It will be displayed on a consignment basis.
To ensure that it will reach the targeted customers, several partnerships with shops and restaurants will have to be ensured. Presently, there are already agreements with at least 5 of these shops and restaurants.
This product will be sold to the A-B market bracket as their source of quality Spanish sardines sourced from local ingredients thereby sold at lower prices. The product is being positioned as a gourmet food for specialty shops and restaurant. It will be also displayed on a consignment basis on supermarkets catering to the A-B market bracket.
The competitors include other manufacturers of processed fish products positioned as gourmet foods. This is just a limited lot since most players in the sardines industry are into retail of low priced sardines.
The Tawilis being the only fresh water sardines in the Philippines is a very distinct advantage compared to the other competitors using the regular sardines harvested from the sea.
The difference lies in the people who comprises the organization which manufactures these tawilis sardines. Composed mainly of rural families of Balete who work as farmers and fishermen, their produce will help them compete with the more established manufacturers of Spanish sardines
To reach potential customers, the business will partner with specialty gourmet shops and restaurants for the display and marketing of tawilis sardines. These institutions were identified since these are where that target customers for the products are frequently seen. Moreover, the choice of distribution will cement the positioning of the product as a gourmet food.
The Entrepreneur & Management
Being a Batangueno, i came from a family of businessmen. My family and relatives have been into different businesses that employment seems an oddity in our kin.
My entrepreneurial skills were honed more when i entered the Family Farm School as we are tasked to mentor our students to become entrepreneurs themselves. I attended an ILO sponsored workshop on Generating and Starting a business. Moreover, I am a graduate of Management Technology
Pampamilyang Paaralang Agrikultura, Inc. (PPAI) is a non-profit institution engaged in rural development through the formation of associations of rural families and businesses, and professional agribusiness training. It maintains two (2) school associations in Batangas province, Balete Family Farm School for girls and Dagatan Family Farm Schools for boys. All the students pay a minimal tuition fee.
The business requires full time management at least 8 hours per day. We will manage it from the supply side up to the marketing of the produce.
Development
The business contributes to additional employment in the locality. All employees are women from the municipality of Balete where opportunities are scarce.
As for the environmental concerns, the project sees to it that the fish used for the production of the sardines come only from legal fishermen. The requirement of the business will hopefully encourage the illegal fishers to harvest fish legally since there is a ready market for their produce
