National Postcode Lottery
The National Postcode Lottery was launched in 1989. It aims to support organisations working to create a fairer, greener world by raising funds and increasing public awareness with the help of a lottery. Today, the Dutch Postcode Lottery is Holland’s biggest and most popular charitable lottery and supports 89 charity organisations. Since its launch in 1989, the lottery has paid out more than 2 billion euros to its beneficiaries.
Fifty percent of the Dutch Postcode Lottery’s gross proceeds goes directly to various charities. Novamedia/Postcode Lotteries is in third place, having donated a total of £451 million for good causes across the world. Only the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in America and the Wellcome Trust in the UK (which donated £1.67 billion and £602 million respectively) are ahead as the largest private donors in the world. They include the Clinton Foundation, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Médecins Sans Frontières, Oxfam Netherlands, the World Wildlife Fund, Amnesty International and Greenpeace.
The Lucky Winners
The way the Dutch Postcode Lottery works is a classic example of a win-win situation. After all, it’s not only our charities that are richly rewarded. Each year, more than 10,000 participants are treated with host of prizes, ranging from full VIP treatment at a resort to becoming a millionaire overnight with the Postcode Jackpot. The weekly street prize, in which a whole street stands to win a spectacular cash award, is popular and well known throughout the Netherlands.
