Burkinakarité
1 year later
Burkinakarité is a union of women associations dedicated to shea butter production and commercialization.
Last year over 68 women have been trained on the management of the association and on karité butter quality. Over 350 women from 4 villages have been informed about the union and will double their income from karité production.
First sales are expected in December. www.burkinakarite.com

Harvest in 2006
The rainy season in 2005 was good. This means that is no problem with karité nuts availability. In August, the women will gather the nuts, which they will process to butter in september and october 2006. The butter is controlled, refiltered and uniformised and packed for the export by the union in Bobo Dioulassso (this will be done by the 5 people directly employed by the union). Two karité butter specialists will be involved to control the production. First shipment is planned in December 2006.
Burkinakarité union
Burkinakarité is the union of 4 women associations from the villages of Kofila, Kwekwesso, Oualana and Toungana.
In May we had two meetings with the women associated with Burkinakarité. A managing board was elected as well as a controlling committee. We are still looking for a manager for the union. This will be absolutely needed if the first shipment of butter is successful and the business becomes continuous.
Training of the women
| Training | When | No of women |
|---|---|---|
| Information to women of the associations | Jan- Feb 2006 | 350 |
| Training of the boards of the associations | March-April 2006 | 24 |
| Training of the delegates of Burkinakarité | April 2006 | 12 |
| Training of women on butter quality | April 2006 | 32 |
Since we are trying to develop an activity with mainly not alphabetized women, the process is slow. Each step is very important. All women are very positive and motivated. However since there are no other examples of Burkinakarité in the immediate surrounding, women wait to see the outcome before to be excited about it. They know what the advantages of Burkinakarité are, but they want to see those advantages in term of revenue increase and ease of work.
