The Business

What is your product/service?

The nursing home is designed to optimise patient flow and give the staff an excellent working environment.A key factor is minimising the risk of contamination between different sections of the facility.
In general the facility consists of four main buildings, the outpatient, the wards ,the maternity and labour wards and the theatre and other supporting elements.
The building will have approximately 450 sq metres of covered workspace.
-The 1st building is already completed and consists of the outpatient department. Also housed here are the pharmacy/laboratory, VCT and hospital offices.
-the 2nd building is complete and has the medical wards.
-the 3rd and 4th buildings are incompete.we have only managed to put up the foundation. We need funds for the superstructure. Otherwise its supposed to house the maternity, labour wards and nursery. The last will have the theatre kitchen and laundry, the hospital and maintainance offices.
We intend to have a fully fledged hospital offerring the following services
1.an accident and emergency department.
2.outpatient department.
3.inpatient services with the following wards-surgical,medical,paediatric,gynaecological,obstetric and special care services.
4.fully equiped major and minor theatres.
5.pharmacy.
6.x-ray and ambulance services
Currently we are offering outpatient services ,medical and paediatric inpatient services and laboratory and pharmaceutical services.
With expansion of our institution we expect to start offering the other services within one week.
We are at the moment unable to offer a full comprehensive medical package and this has made us to be less competitve.

Explain how you will sell your product/service (marketing strategy) and how you will reach your customers (distribution strategy)?

In medical services we are not allowed by law to advertise/market ourselves, but we have the NHIF which assists in community mobilization because of their clients. They usually move round advising their clients on the accredited medical institutions.
At the same time we indirectly market our selves by using the voluntary counseling and testing mobile community activities.
The NHIF basically gives rebates to institutions based on the infractructure and the equipment available.Currently our rebate is very low but the NHIF have agreed to increase our rebate to comprehensive package level once we expand.
It works as follows: the institution is given a contract of treating all NHIF members without the patient paying anything.the NHIF pays all the monies owed. This is beneficial in that there is no shortage of customers as long as services are adequate.
In our setup, there are only two institutions with a comprehensive care package. They are not able to cope with client flow, so we have been advised to expand as soon as possible.

What makes your business different/better than your competitors (competitive advantage)?

Our institution is unique in several ways:
1. quality and care of service.
2. in this area we are the referral point for malaria treatment.
3.our sincerity in helping patients to improve.

The Entrepreneur & Management

Describe the entrepreneur & management

I am a qualified medical doctor. I was awarded the degree of bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery from the university of nairobi in 1987 after which i worked in several public health hospitals upto and including 1991.
Since them ,i have been involved in medical practise in the private sector, initially as a medical doctor in a clinic and now as the resident doctor /director of my institution -kagio nursing home.
I have acquired vast experience in management in medical settings.
Most health facilities fail because of lack or inadequate equipment but we expect to counter this by constant upgrading and necessary improvement in technology.

Development

How does your business improve the local living standards (social and environmental)?

Good health is a basic right and a pre-requisite for rapid socio-economic development.Healthy peipole are an essential source for socio-economic development and in the final analysis, human health and well being are in themselves the ultimate goal of all our development efforts. The problems associated with access to health care and management in our country are multifactorial.but we expect to take services to the people.
We hope to assist/enable our patients to attain a level of health that will permit them to lead a socially and economically productive life. This will reduce the enormous cost of illnesses.
We also expect to employ 20 workers who will benefit from the empolyment and indirectly their members of their families.
