The Business

What is your product/service?

Kriterion will screen art house movies throughout the year. On a regular basis visitors can see regional and non-regional, art house film, vulnerable high quality film, experimental film, documentary, classics, short film and animation. Apart from screening movies, Kriterion is a place where other activities will take place as well. The regular program can be complemented with film premiere parties, theme (film) nights, symposia and workshops. The students can organize festivals and competitions. Where the one week a ‘sing along Sound of Music’ takes place, during the next week’s symposia political themes will not be shunned. A constant interaction between cultural entertainment and serious topics illustrates the rule of Kriterion.

Explain how you will sell your product/service (marketing strategy) and how you will reach your customers (distribution strategy)?

Firstly, we have set off publicity trough the websites of Foundation Kriterion Sarajevo and partner organization YUA Foundation in the Netherlands. Secondly, we communicate with our audience through media publicity (TV, Radio stations and newspapers). In Bosnia as well as The Netherlands Kriterion has had attention in the newspapers and on the radio.
In addition, promotion materials- posters and flyers announce every Kriterion event. Concretely:
• Sending a Press Kit (press release with PDF form of design for poster and flayer) to journalists, 10 days before every event.
• Sending an invitation for events to all media houses, 5 days before event.
• Printing 30 posters and 400 flyers with information about event, and distribute them.
The flyers include short text information about the project and the announcement of the event. Until now, results are excellent: all events have gotten full media attention in Bosnia and a full cinema. The results of the questionnaires clearly show that the audience is in need of a new art house cinema.
Since Kriterion Sarajevo is the only art house cinema in the city, so far the only competition is Sarajevo Film Festival that has already shown interest in cooperating with Kriterion for organizing joint events.

What makes your business different/better than your competitors (competitive advantage)?

Kriterion will be the only art house cinema in the history of Bosnia, complitly run by students. Kriterion's will contribute to a broader and more diverse cinematographic environment that Sarajevo is now lacking. Kriterion developing young people skills and give them chance to gain work experience.

Development

How does your business improve the local living standards (social and environmental)?

Due to a lack of local activity it is difficult to find a (part time) job in Sarajevo. Therefore it is hard for students to generate an income and contribute to their living expenses. In addition, without any previous working experience it is almost impossible to find a job on the limited labour market after obtaining a degree. Unfortunately new student initiatives are not often stimulated by the local authorities and universities, and are usually even discouraged! Developing young people’s skills is not a priority in post-war Sarajevo. Driven by the desire to be (financially) independent and to create a better future, many young people seek opportunities abroad.

There for, the objectives of Kriterion are:
1.Creating jobs for students in which they gain work experience and develop their livelihood skills.

2.Creating a politically independent meeting place for all ethnic/ religious backgrounds.

By offering an independent, cultural and a-political stage Kriterion stimulates an inter-ethnic and inter-religious dialogue which is still disturbed in Sarajevo. Thus Kriterion contributes to a peaceful and open society.
