Importance of market access and market development
Because economic growth is an important weapon in the fight against poverty, the Netherlands seeks to stimulate the growth of the private sector in developing countries. A flourishing business sector creates more jobs, enabling more people to earn a living and be self-reliant. This contributes to achieving the first Millennium Development Goal of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger.
Access to local, regional and international markets is essential to a good business climate, since trade entails growth and creates scope for further integration in the global economy. If developing countries are to gain a more equal status in the world market, it is crucial to establish a fair, rule-based, non-discriminatory multilateral trade system which takes account of differing levels of economic development. To achieve this objective, the Market Access and Market Development team focuses on influencing national and international policy and on strengthening developing countries’ bargaining power.
Market access alone is not enough to secure economic growth for developing countries; they also need the supply capacity to be able to take advantage of market opportunities. Production capacity and productivity must be raised, and a thorough understanding of national, regional and international markets is crucial. It is important to address both market development and market access. DDE therefore supports developing countries in strengthening their capacity to make optimal use of trade opportunities on the national, regional and international markets.
