Multiespacio 2000: The House that Grows
Technology to Improve Living
Currently the housing shortage in Ecuador is estimated at 600,000 units and growing by 50,000 each year. The velocity of population growth in the region has drastically increased the number of informal settlements in the periphery of Ecuador’s major cities. The number of people living in these marginal zones without access to adequate housing or basic services is estimated at almost half of Ecuador’s urban population.
Multiespacio has formulated an innovative system for the design, production and assembly of quality low-cost housing. Multiespacio has designed a factory for the manufacturing of blocks to be used in the construction of these housing solutions. Multiespacio plans to build pilot factories in each of Ecuador’s three major cities and expects to begin sales upon their completion in 2007. Multiespacio addresses a large, targeted market in Ecuador’s major cities alone and exhibits a high potential for national and international expansion; as well as expansion into other market niches such as the construction of schools and hospitals.
Multiespacio will play an important role in the eradication of Ecuador’s housing crisis and provision of basic services to currently marginalized populations; as well as provide a quality, low-cost housing model to be replicated and applied internationally in situations of affortable housing shortage.
