Business start-up:

Bridging the digital devide in Kibera Slum.

Community Information Center-Kibera

This business idea is proposed by Kibera Community Youth Programme, which is a youth initiative from Kibera slums and works on youth empowerment issues through a multisectoral approach in a ,model of self-help. The idea involves collecting, analyzing, programming and distribution of information to the larger audience. With information being vital for any development process, bridging the digital divide by providing affordable ICTs to the low income youth within Kibera is therefore essential to achieve the development goals.
The community information center will act as an information access point through internet, CD ROMs and print media as well as providing secretarial services and training in ICTs, e-solutions, telephone services, VOIP at an affordable cost.
The information center will be run by the youth as a business enterprise and offer affordable services tailored to them as well as the community in general; creating employment opportunities as an effort towards poverty reduction in Kibera slum.
The Kenya Youth and ICTs process focuses on the country. An endeavour to begin interventions towards enhancing the participation of the youth is what has been colleted into the project that now has KCYP participating in trying to localize the global trends.

The Business

What is your product/service?

It will operate as a business enterprise with its core business being, the provision of ICT training, internet services, collecting, analysing, programming and distribution of information in various packages to the larger audience and offering telephone services,VOIP alongside various e-solutions e.g. e-learning,e-government,e-conferencing etc.
There are plans to also start special programs that will target both primary and high school students from Kibera through the establishment of computer clubs through which computer lessons will be offered at an affordable cost to the pupils.
Computer games that are meant for mental development of the primary school children
The target market is the expanded Kibera slum which is characterized by low-income population who lack the capacity to afford high cost ICTs services in the market and the transportation involved to reach where they are located
The business has a huge base of customers ranging from out-of-school youth, in-school youth, business people and community based organizations that require ICTs to enable them run their day-to-day activities efficiently.
There is over 600 community based organizations that require ICT related services i.e. typing, copying etc.It be able to perform their daily work efficiently, the business enterprises found in Kibera need to get in touch with their consumers from time to time for product updates; this provides a niche for service provision where the center will act as a middle-man in various chains of distributions either product or service.
Kibera being one of the largest slums in Sub-Saharan Africa with an approximated population of One million, where 60% are youth from the ages of 15-30, there is a ready market for the various services proposed at the CIC which are tailored to meet the youth needs in the general bid to bridge the digital divide in Kibera slum.
The fact that youth forms the largest percentage of the slum dwellers, and is unemployed; they are naturally potential clients for the information center.

Explain how you will sell your product/service (marketing strategy) and how you will reach your customers (distribution strategy)?

The business intends to use mass media, the local administration, community organizations, and personalized visits alongside other promotional activities to improve its sales.
This will be done through good customer care, free offers, and promotions to ensure that, clients get a test of the services being offered to encourage them in using the CIC on a consistent basis.
Affordable ICTs provision in the slums of Kibera is purely a new phenomena; there however exists some institutions providing trainings in computer packages and other initiatives dealing in secretarial services.
We have a niche to provide internet services alongside secretarial services under one roof; this is anticipated to draw clients as they would rather do their work at a central place.
Given that, our services will be delivered in a more professional and at an affordable cost without compromising quality standards; we are able to stand out in the market and maintain clients.
We do not have any business partner as of now and apart from the BiD Challenge prize money,we will be trying to fundraise as well as look for interested partners in the business venture.

Development

How does your business improve the local living standards (social and environmental)?

The business will enable many young people to gain skills and knowledge in IT sector that would enhance their future employability at a very reduced rate.A considerable number of youth will directly be employed by the business in various departments while others will indirectly access income through a set of services to be offered at the center.
This business will contribute to the efforts of eradicating poverty as well as achievement of global partnership goal.Training to the underprivileged youth from the slums will facilitate their easy entry to the job markets where they can compete favourably.

Why it is essential to bridge the digital divide.

Being in the 21st century, technology defines and thus moves the economies of different countries around the world;even in Kenya, the accessibility of the markets to the consumers and the businesses is a key factor that engines the development of a particular place.
Kibera being home to an estimated population of one million people,it is imperative that, information ,technology ,communication is accessed for development to be realized in this vast area which stands out as a true testimony of poverty with people living in disadvantaged conditions.
This is not to say that the population is not educated, the problem is access to employment opportunities and the challanges that comes with new technological innovations that have not been grasped by the inhabitants of this area.
Bringing close, tools of technology would greatly impact on the development of the area with people being able to learn basic skills of communication via internet and accessing markets for their various products.
The circles of poverty will be reduced through the skills gained and affordability of communication through the internet and other ICT related avenues.
Kibera has a chance to develop if the digital divide is bridged and this should happen fast;that is why we are looking for start up capital in that direction.
You can be a partner, supporter or a sponsor in this vital initiative.
Eradication of poverty is not an event, this is aprocess which involves giving the communities;the tools required to empower themselves and come out of poverty.
